Pastel de nata is a traditional Portuguese dessert with fluffy egg custard.
It was served as early as the 17th and 18th centuries by Catholic priests in Lisbon. At that time, monks and nuns used egg whites in large quantities to starch their clothes, and the remaining yolks were used to make various pastries, including Pastel de nata.
Today, Pastel de nata is widespread throughout Western Europe, including in many Asian countries, as well as among the former Portuguese colonies of Brazil and Macau.
